Cash flow statement template (Excel)
Excel (.xlsx). Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice. No sign-up.
- Operating, investing and financing sections
- Working-capital changes lines
- Net change in cash, opening and closing cash
- A reconciliation row against the bank statement
- Two periods side by side
How to use the template
Start from net income, adjust for the non-cash items and the changes in receivables, payables, inventory and deferred revenue, then add investing and financing flows. Closing cash should match the bank statement; the reconciliation row shows the difference.
The operating section is the one to watch. A business can show profit and still run out of cash when customers pay slowly or inventory piles up.
Cash flow versus profit
Profit is revenue minus expenses for a period. Cash flow is money in minus money out. They differ because of timing, and the difference is where most small businesses get into trouble. The guide on profit versus cash walks through it.
