How to use the template
Fill in what the business owns, what it owes and what the owners have put in or left in, as of one date. Totals calculate themselves, and the check row at the bottom shows zero when assets equal liabilities plus equity. If it does not, something is missing or double-counted, which is exactly what the row is for.
Accounts receivable is what customers owe you; accounts payable is what you owe suppliers. Deferred revenue is cash received for work not yet delivered, which is a liability, not income.
Why it matters
Lenders, landlords and buyers ask for a balance sheet before an income statement, because it shows whether the business can pay its bills. Keeping one current is hard by hand; accounting software produces it from the same entries as everything else.
