Enter the price, pick the state, and add the local rate if you know it. Choose "Take tax out of a total" when you have a receipt total and need the pre-tax amount, for example when entering an expense in the books.
The state list carries each state's base rate. In most states, cities, counties and special districts add their own, so the combined rate at a specific address is usually higher than the state figure. The note under the result tells you what to expect for that state.
What it does not do
It does not know which products are taxable in which state, whether you have nexus there, or the exact rate at a street address. Groceries, clothing, digital goods and services are taxed differently from state to state, and remote sellers only collect in states where they cross the economic-nexus threshold. The sales tax mistakes guide covers those rules.
Use it for quick quotes and expense entry. For filing, rely on the rate your invoicing or tax software applied at the time of sale.
